Three Effective Ways of Bluffing in Poker
Bluffing is a good technique in poker. Pros use it now and then. There are 3 kinds of bluffing in poker that experts use sparingly.
The first is pure bluffing. We have a weak hand but we act as if we have a strong one. We do this by acting confidently with our facial expressions (what they call a "poker face") or bodily gestures. But more than these, bluffing in poker is also done though the way we play and bet.
We may choose to bet, especially just after the flop is revealed, even if the flopped cards don't mean anything to our weak hand. If we hold an A8 hand and the flop comes 24Q, we may place a bet to pretend that we hold something that is strengthened by a card or two from the board cards. This kind of bluffing in poker is sometimes effective, especially when we're playing against weak opponents. But this is also too risky to do.
There is also the semi bluffing in poker. This technique is a safer one compared to pure bluffing because we hold something substantial here - a possible drawing hand. For instance, we hold a suited AK spade, and the flop shows j and 3 spades plus a 4 diamond. We can either hit a spade flush or a top pair A or K. If we place a wager with this hand we are doing a semi bluffing in poker - yes, we're pretending to have a strong hand but with a basis. We may hit a helpful card on the next betting round.
When we have a really strong hand and we want to build a big pot to win, we slow play the hand. This bluffing in poker pretends that we hold a weak hand so that opponents will be led to think that they can scare us out of the pot. When we play a premium hand too aggressively, we may scare players out of the pot but we might scare them too soon and have so little in the pot for us to win. So, the best play is to make them call and raise until the turn or the river. Bluffing in poker by slow playing makes for a profitable win.
But remember that bluffing in poker should not be a regular feature of our play strategy. We should use this technique sparingly to avoid becoming predictable. We should master the how and when of bluffing in poker to use it for our advantage.
